Midtown Atlanta Duplex Featured in HGTV’s Color Issue

Drew and Janson moved into their duplex in midtown Atlanta, Georgia and needed an interior designer to help make it their own.

We wanted to achieve a layered, curated look that was still comfortable and cozy. I felt the room needed something to tie in the pieces Drew and Janson already had - a bed, a rug, and a dresser. An accent wall can really do the trick but that trick has been done one hundred times over. I had to think outside the box.

Why not take that accent wall and compress it, then stretch it? A warm, rich rust tone outlining the dresser, running up the wall, onto the ceiling, and all the way across to the other wall would break all the boundaries.

As bold as it may look to the eye, Drew and Janson mentioned that being in this space makes them feel like they’re being wrapped in a warm blanket -“a warm Hermes blanket!"

When HGTV Magazine came across the photos of Drew and Janson’s guest room, they reached out to use it in their recent issue about paint. The feature called it the “statement stripe”, which I think really suits it. The color adds just the right amount of visual interest while complementing the curtains and vintage trim beautifully. It was exactly what the room needed to tie it together.

There are so many ways to use paint to make a statement. Columns, wainscoting, trim, the sky is the limit! My advice: start with your inspiration first - colors and patterns in nature, architecture, art…anything. Then, incorporate those colors and patterns into the space.

A common misconception is that good interior design is unattainable and that it changes too often. But, if you stick with your personal style and build on it, good interior design is sustainable and timeless. And a good interior designer can take your style and give you a dynamic design that you will love for years to come.

Taking on a project yourself? Play with paint, scour vintage stores, and take your time.

Special thanks to Drew and Janson for trusting me with the design of their home, to HGTV Magazine for the feature, and to you for reading!
